Digital Cities

The City of Ogden is one of the most digital-savvy, cutting-edge mid-size cities in the nation, according to a report released this month by the Center for Digital Government and the National League of Cities, which composed a list of the top 10 digital cities in America.

Ogden was awarded the top ranking in the 2006 Digital Cities Survey, for cities with populations between 75,000 and 124,999.  The survey is an annual review of how the nation's city governments are utilizing information technology to increase citizen service and streamline operations.  In the four years that Ogden has been reviewed by the Center for Digital Government, Ogden has not ranked below third place, being ranked #2 in 2003, #1 in 2004, and #3 in 2005.

"The City is working hard to utilize technology to improve all areas of government; the award reflects the City's commitment to use information technology to improve service delivery while reducing the cost of government," said Ogden Mayor Mathew Godfrey.

"Participation in the Digital Cities Survey allows us to benchmark where we are in comparison to other cities," said Godfrey.  "It is a great to see we are on the right track and that we have received national recognition for our efforts."

The 2006 survey consisted of 23 details questions each requiring response and an online or other link to back up documentation.  The survey covers a broad range areas concerning how cities use technology to provide both online and traditionally delivered service to their citizens.  In presenting this year's award to Ogden, Cathilea Robinett, executive director for the Center for Digital Government, cited Ogden's innovative Good Landlord Incentive program, which has received international attention and recognition as one of the leading IT projects in 2006 which best benefited humanity receiving, earlier this year, the prestigious 2006 ComputerWorld Honors Laureate.

Two other Utah cities also scored high in the rankings.  Salt Lake City was ranked #4 and Orem was ranked #3 in their respective population categories.
