This month the Ogden Water Filter Plant reached an amazing milestone; over one-billion gallons of drinking water have now been produced at the plant proving that it has been a reliable source of drinking water for nearly 60 years. Even though the plant still provides safe drinking water after all these years, the facility does not meet current seismic codes and has some serious structural issues.

The Ogden Water Filter Plant has been a reliable source of drinking water for nearly 60 years. Even though the plant was constructed in 1954, it continues to meet current and expected drinking water regulations. Even though the plant provides safe drinking water, the plant does not meet current seismic codes and has some serious structural issues.

The plant has reached the point that repairing its defects has become more expensive than replacing it. The Ogden City Council, in accordance with the 2012 Master Plan, has authorized funds to reconstruct the Filter Plant. A recent $1 million dollar loan from the Sewer Utility to the Water Utility was approved by the City Council. This money is being used to commence the design of the new plant. Construction on the new Filter Plant will begin in 2013.

A qualification process has recently been completed to choose an engineering consultant to complete this design. This process was conducted to ensure that the most knowledgeable and capable firm was given the important responsibility of engineering the new Filter Plant. After a process that included a rigorous proposal evaluation, a detailed presentation and in-depth interviews, Sunrise Engineering has been selected to design the Filter Plant Reconstruction.

Sunrise is the author of the recently adopted Water Master Plan. Sunrise has also been involved in numerous Ogden City Water Projects including the 9th Street Reservoirs, 23rd Street Reservoir Rehabilitation, the 36th – 46th Transmission Line and so on. Sunrise has operated for over 32 years and has completed various Filter Plant projects in the State of Utah. The Water Utility is confident that this project, although highly challenging, will achieve great results for Water Utility customers.

The new Filter Plant is an exciting step forward in ensuring the long term viability of the Ogden City Water System. The new plant will provide cleaner and more dependable water to the entire city.
