Officer Charles Manzel

February 5, 1876 - May 9, 1921

Patrolman Manzel was on his first shift since returning to the department after a three-year absence to manufacture harness for the war effort. Just before he was to go off duty, Manzel discovered a burglary at the N.O. Ogden clothing store on 25th Street. During the investigation, Patrolman Manzel was shot in the back of the head by one of two men he had stopped for questioning. At the time of his death, 45-year-old Charles Manzel had served as a police officer a total of eight years and was the father of three children.
