Fire Prevention Division

Functions
To insure compliance to the adopted local, state, and national fire and life safety codes and ordinances. Performs fire investigations, business inspections for code compliance, and educational classes for fire prevention to elementary schools, businesses and general public.
Goals
Produce quality improvement questionnaire cards to send to businesses that we have provided services to.
Provide support to Fire Operations on the Life Safety inspection program. This targets occupancies that pose the potential for high life loss or injury. Complete 90% of the code compliance issues referred by Operations within 30 days of referral.
Send one detective to the National Fire Academy for arson investigation to aid the division. Two detectives will allow us to utilize the Police Department more effectively with the criminal side of investigations.
Provide educational opportunities for the staff of the Fire Prevention Division. Send 1 staff member to the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Send 2 staff members to the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) annual training seminar. Send 2 staff members to the characterization (clown and puppet) school. Send 3 staff members to the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) code update.
Services
The Fire Prevention Division provides a wide variety of services related to the new construction and reconstruction of properties and buildings. These services include side plan reviews, fire sprinkler and alarm plan reviews, on-site inspection and testing of these systems for acceptance, and periodic ongoing reinspections to insure code compliance is maintained. Provides a reduction of public nuisances through the Public Nuisance Abatement process. Provides education to the community to promote good fire and life safety practices through programs such as the Juvenile Firesetter Education Program, the Boots and Bunker Clowns in schools, and community fire and injury prevention presentations. Assists the Fire Operations in the inspection, access planning, and pre-incident planning of high consequence occupancies in the City. Investigates all fires for determination of cause and origin and coordinates with law enforcement providing arson investigation services for fires that are suspicious.
