QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT OGDEN CITY'S CURBSIDE RECYCLING PROGRAM
Ogden City began recycling May 2002. This program allows residents to easily recycle newspapers, aluminum cans, soda bottles, cardboard, magazines and junk mail. Residents can put the blue recycling cart out at the curb along with their regular green trash cart.
Why Should I Recycle?
- Because recyclables typically take up 40 - 50 percent of the space in your green garbage cart.
- You can save money by using only one garbage cart instead of two, OR by using a smaller garbage cart.
- Your cost to pay for solid waste to be hauled to Southeast Utah for burial in a landfill is reduced.
- You can help the environment by reducing the amount of raw materials that need to be harvested or mined. Also, the cost to process recycled materials is cheaper and uses less energy than processing raw materials.
When the garbage truck picks up my recyclable materials, they are dumped in the same chute where the garbage is dumped. Are they really being recycled?
- Yes, they are being recycled. The refuse truck has a split body with two compartments. The paddle (divider) is positioned either left or right by the operator from inside the cab, blocking off one half of the truck body. When a cart is dumped, the paddle then sweeps the material and deposits it into the appropriate open compartment: garbage on one side and recyclable materials on the other.
What is the easiest way for me to recycle?
- Place recyclables in the blue cart.
- Place garbage in the green cart.
- Place yard trimmings in the green cart OR take them to the Green Waste drop-off site.
How do I replace my 100-gallon with a 64-gallon green garbage cart?
- You may request this change by contacting us at 629-8271.
- Your request will be addressed within 2-5 business days. Please make sure the cart we are picking up is visible from the street, but not on the street and accessible by our employees.
What is the cost of this recycling service?
- The monthly cost for one large green garbage cart and a recycling container is $13.68 per month.
- A smaller, 64-gallon green garbage cart is $11.71 per month.

How can I help make recycling succeed in Ogden City?
- Only put recyclables in the blue cart, and only set out your recycling cart when it is more than half full.
- Take yard trimmings to the Ogden City Green Waste drop-off site, instead of putting this material in the green garbage cart.
- Do not overfill either the green or blue carts, which cause material to be spilled. Cart lids must always be completely down.
