LEGAL SERVICES FOR OLDER ADULTS IN UTAH
Many older adults experience problems that can threaten their health, income, rights, and overall safety. Many of these problems can be remedied through legal intervention. Often older persons may not realize the problems they are faced with require legal assistance or often an older person may not know how to get a lawyer or is afraid of how much it will cost them.
Legal assistance is available to persons in Utah 60 years of age and older. Legal help is available even if you are homebound or in a nursing home or hospital.
Legal assistance provided through the Older Americans Act programs typically addresses the following types of cases:
- Age discrimination
- Consumer fraud
- Domestic relations such as divorce and domestic violence
- Estate planning such as simple wills, some forms of trusts, simple estate administration
- Grandparent rights
- Guardianship, powers of attorney, and other surrogate decision making issues
- Health care such as Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance issues
- Home ownership, housing, and landlord/tenant issues
- Income protection such as Social Security, SSI, Veterans Benefits, food stamps, and other government benefits
- Long term care such as nursing homes, assisted living, and resident rights
- Protective Services abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation.
