Ogden Police Department's K-9 Unit

There are different kinds of teams that make up a strong, effective police force. One such team is that of officer and canine. The Ogden City Police Department has four officers working in the K-9 Unit who are certified through the Utah Police Officer
Standards and Training (POST) as both Narcotics Detector Dog Handler and Patrol Dog Handler.
Police dogs are required to be trained and certified for functions they perform, which takes a great deal of time. A dog can only be involved in training for about 10 minutes at a time. The training period is then followed by a 45-minute break for rest and play before training can be resumed. Most dogs are purchased from specialized breeders in Eastern Europe, who start training the dogs as puppies for police work. The primary functions police dogs are trained to perform, other than protecting their human counterparts, are:

  • Detaining a submissive person
  • Subduing a hostile or fleeing person
  • Releasing a person on command
  • Indicating the presence of a person and/or evidence
  • Detecting illegal narcotics

Officer Chatelain and Police Dog Brit

Brit is an 8-year-old German shepherd imported from the
Czech Republic.  He is certified as a Narcotics Detector
Dog and as a Patrol (apprehension) Dog.
Brit is very protective of the K-9 truck and barks furiously
when it is approached.  He seems to enjoy startling people
as they pass. Brit will soon retire from service.

Officer Cottrell and Police Dogs Hero & Bandit

Hero is a 9-year-old German shepherd and is used exclusively as a Drug Detector Dog. Hero's total drug seizures amount to over $8,000,000 and $250,000 in cash.  Hero's last find was $127,000 in cash that was hidden in the middle of a wall. Bandit is a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois and is used exclusively as a Patrol Dog.  Bandit has great potential as a Police Dog.

Officer Finder and Police Dog Ranger

Ranger is a 3 1/2-year-old German shepherd imported from     Holland. One example of Ranger's value to police work came
during a call for assistance on a burglary in progess.
Ranger was sent in to search the site.  He located and held the suspect until he was given the command to release.
If the suspect had not been so concerned with what the dog was going to do to him, he might have used the loaded revolver that was
later found in the pocket of his coat.
