There are different kinds of teams that make up a strong, effective police force. One such team is that of officer and canine. The Ogden City Police Department has four officers working in the K-9 Unit who are certified through the Utah Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) as both Narcotics Detector Dog Handler and Patrol Dog Handler. Police dogs are required to be trained and certified for functions they perform, which takes a great deal of time. A dog can only be involved in training for about 10 minutes at a time. The training period is then followed by a 45-minute break for rest and play before training can be resumed. Most dogs are purchased from specialized breeders in Eastern Europe, who start training the dogs as puppies for police work. The primary functions police dogs are trained to perform, other than protecting their human counterparts, are:
-
Detaining a submissive person
-
Subduing a hostile or fleeing person
-
Releasing a person on command
-
Indicating the presence of a person and/or evidence
-
