Ogden City, recognizing the need to assist and protect children going to and from school, began the program in 1955 with ten crossing guards and one alternate. By 1965 the program had increased to 14 crossing guards. The 1999-2000 school year required 24 guards and seven alternates to cover all of the designated areas in the city. These dedicated men and women, who have pledged to protect our children, must be at their post in all kinds of weather to ensure that motorist slow down, be watchful and stop when children are trying to cross the streets. A crossing guard is also required to set up and monitor the safety equipment used such as flashing lights, cones, reflective signs and clothing.
Good judgement and a love of children are the main qualifications for this position, according to Jackie Smith, crossing guard supervisor. These qualities were certainly exemplified by Vernon Bair, who has just retired with 31 years of dedicated service as a crossing guard.
