The Ogden City Police Department, in conjunction with the Ogden City School District, is committed to providing area schools a safe learning environment. This goal is the reason behind a program, known as the School Resource Officer (SRO). This program has placed 7 police officers in the local middle schools and high schools. The partnership between the police department and school district has been a successful addition to Community Policing, and has reduced the amount of violent crimes in and around schools.
The School Resource Officer Program consists of seven school resource officer positions with seven full-time resource officers assigned to the Ogden City School District. Five of the officers are funded through a grant, Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative, United States Department of Justice. The COPS portion of the grant received funding that incorporates a parternship between the Ogden School District and the Police Department.
The officers have been highly praised by the Ogden School District for their involvement in interdiction and prevention activities in the schools. The School Superintendent, principals and school administrators, along with teachers and other school personnel have expressed appreciation for having officers in their schools.
All seven officers handle runaway cases and do follow-up cases on incidents at the schools. The SRO's assigned to the middle schools teach the middle school D.A.R.E. curriculum to their students.
