Ogden City Arts, along with Ogden Downtown Alliance, is excited to announce the winners of the Nine Rails Creative District call for art. This call, released in early fall 2018, was put out with the intent to award five artists $1000 each to create or perform works of art within the new Nine Rails Creative District.
The Nine Rails Creative District in Ogden, Utah exists to support and encourage creatives, provide the community with new opportunities to engage with art in the public realm, and create a vibrant connection between Downtown and neighboring East Central residential areas. This initiative has been made with the hope to encourage creatives to live and work in the district. The Nine Rails Creative District Master Plan (officially adopted on August 14, 2018 by Ogden City Council) was set in place to guide future investment within the district in areas ranging from streetscape improvements, to public art projects, to new arts programming and events. The adoption of this plan ensures that the Creative District will continue to develop and strengthen Ogden’s art presence. To support the implementation of the plan, there is intention to fund several small public art projects that will occur in the district by June 2019.
The new public art projects will showcase various Ogden artists, create an experience of discovery in Nine Rails area and serve as inspiration for future projects in the district. The goal of the project is to increase street-level activity and vibrancy in the newly adopted district. Additionally, the project is intended to increase public engagement with the arts and to continue establishing the identity of the Creative District.
The Ogden City Arts Advisory Committee, the Ogden City Diversity Officer, and a representative from Ogden Downtown Alliance selected the following artists and projects from the 21 submissions that were received from the call for art.
Benjamin Zack- Project will provide nine portraits photographs of people in their own environments, who live, work or recreate in and around the Nine Rails District. Each image will be printed on 4’x3’ vinyl banners and displayed at various locations throughout the district.
Local Artisan Collective- Project will be an installation inspired by the Spike 150 Celebration. The work will be created and displayed next May 2019. This project is a collaboration of 11 different artists and will be a railroad-inspired piece.
Lindsay Huss- Project is for a newly painted crosswalk adjacent the Weber County Main Library located on 25th and Jefferson. The library and its role in the community will inspire the crosswalk mural. Project completion depends upon weather restrictions for outside painting, but should be happening in spring 2019.
Carey Campbell- Project is a performance piece consisting of a flutist performance of JS Bach with modern electronic music accompaniment. This will be a collaboration of something old and something new. The project will possibly have one or more dancers and will be completed sometime before July 2019.
Kristen Mitchell- Project will consist of multiple artist’s drawings of live yoga participants from the classes held at the main library. The drawings will be displayed in a public exhibition by July 2019.
