Public Hearings set for proposed Ogden City budget and tax increase

Formatted HTML message

OGDEN – The Ogden City Council will host public hearings at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, and Tuesday, August 2 regarding the Fiscal Year 2023 Budget. This includes a Truth in Taxation hearing as required by state law if a municipality is considering a tax increase.

The Council will consider a property tax increase to fund salary increases for all Ogden City employees, new positions in Police, Fire, and Sustainability, as well as to combat inflationary costs of materials.

"Inflation has hit us all, and Ogden City is no exception. This increase will help us continue to retain quality employees and continue to provide a high level of service to our residents," City Council Chair Ben Nadolski said. "We want to be completely transparent with the proposed increase and give residents plenty of opportunities to have their questions answered and their voices heard."

The proposed increase is 18.83% more than the Certified Tax Rate established by Weber County. This increase would apply to Ogden City's portion of the total property tax bill, which was 17.48% in 2021. In contrast, Ogden School District collected over 55% of property taxes in 2021.

On average, the proposed increase would be $82.53 higher annually than the Certified Tax Rate. This is based on the average taxable value of both commercial and residential properties in Ogden, which is $225,000.

Property owners can view a more accurate estimate of their expected tax bill by using the interactive calculator on OgdenCity.com/BudgetProcess.

Comments can be submitted to the Council at any time via email at citycouncil@ogdencity.com or by phone at 801-629-8158. Individual Council members can be reached using the contact information found at OgdenCity.com/CouncilContact.

For more information, please contact Ogden City Council Executive Director Janene Eller-Smith at JaneneEller-Smith@ogdencity.com or 801-629-8165.
